Extending the Action Window for Safety and Performance in Battery Energy Storage
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) incorporate multiple layers of safety protection, from intrinsic cell-level mechanisms to module-level Battery Management Systems (BMS). These protections are essential to safe lithium-ion operation.
Yet safety incidents, including thermal runaway events, continue to occur across the industry. EPRI’s Battery Energy Storage Systems Failure Incident Database documents more than 80 grid-scale incidents since 2018. Although the failure rate has decreased significantly, high-impact events continue to occur. And while such events are relatively rare, their financial and operational consequences can be substantial.
